A Brief History of G.E. Mathis Company in Chicago, Illinois
In 1905, George E. Mathis founded the G.E. Mathis Company in Chicago as a one-person sheet metal fabrication shop. 118 years later, the company has become a global leader in the supply of custom, close-tolerance metal fabrications. Despite significantly expanding operations, the company remains true to the core values on which it was founded: quality, integrity, and craftsmanship. These principles have guided four generations of leaders toward realizing the company vision—to lead our industry and pursue growth opportunities for the company, our employees, customers, and manufacturing partners.
While the G.E. Mathis Company team serves customers across the nation, we also maintain close ties with the Chicago community. Many of the company’s craftsmen are second- and third-generation employees armed with fabrication knowledge passed down throughout the years. Additionally, we’ve contributed to many fabrication projects that improved the overall quality of the city.
One of our recent projects involved working with an artist to design and construct a sculpture. They approached us with drawings, CAD files, and a vision, all of which helped us to develop a design plan for the structure. The finalized plan required us to plasma cut designs onto two separate carbon steel plates and then weld them together into a single piece. Once our work was completed, the piece was then sent out for painting and installation. The combination of the artist’s vision and our team’s fabrication skills resulted in a beautiful sculpture that now stands on display near the United Center in Chicago for the enjoyment of all passersby.
