What Is MIG Welding?

MIG welding, also known as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), uses an adjustable, continuously fed solid wire electrode to create welded joints. An electric arc forms between the workpiece and the electrode, which generates enough heat to melt and join the metals. 

How Is MIG Welding Used?

As the electrical current generates heat, the filler materials melt to join two or more metal workpieces. In many cases, the filler material doubles as the electrode. This type of arc welding can be performed manually by a trained technician, or the process can be automated through moving equipment to ensure proper positioning and orientation.
